Superman costume had Henry breathless

Los Angeles - Henry Cavill reveals his "childlike excitement" at becoming Superman.

In Man of Steel, the 30-year-old star will become the first British actor to take on the iconic role and fondly recalled donning the legendary cape for the first time.

He said: "I was infused with this childlike excitement. I had been to numerous fittings, through all the prototype phases, with hundreds of bits of the costume. I promised myself I wouldn't look in the mirror until the whole thing was ready.

"When I turned around, it took my breath away. The 'S' emblazoned on my chest, the boots, the red came ... Superman seeps into every boy's consciousness. I remember running around the garden with a makeshift cape, then later a hand-me-down from one of my older brothers.

"The 'S' is the third most recognisable symbol on the planet, after the Christian cross and Coca-Cola. It isn't a Halloween costume. I was Superman."

'He was very encouraging'

The movie also sees him reunited with Russell Crowe - who plays his father - after the Gladiator star helped inspire him to become an actor when he visited Henry's school to film scenes for 2000's Proof of Life.

He revealed to the Mail on Sunday's Event magazine: "He was very encouraging. He told me, 'Sometimes they treat you well and sometimes they don't and sometimes the pay it's great and sometimes it's not. But it's great fun.

"A couple of days later I got a note from Russell that said, 'Dear Henry, the journey of 1 000 miles begins with a single step. Best, Russell' ... It was incredibly kind of him."
