Taylor Swift to play Joni Mitchell

Los Angeles - Taylor Swift has been confirmed to play Joni Mitchell in a biopic.

The singer will portray the Canadian singer-songwriter in a film adaptation of Sheila Weller's 2008 book Girls Like Us, which will tell the story of the lives of female music stars Joni, Carole King and Carly Simon and their impact on a generation of female musicians.

Midnight in Paris actress Alison Pill has been linked to portray Carole, and Mad Men's Jessica Pare is thought to be in the frame for the role of Carly, Variety reports.

John Sayles is to direct the movie from a script penned by House executive producer Katie Jacobs, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura set to produce the film.

While Taylor has mainly been concentrating on forging a successful music career, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter has found time to feature in a number of movies including romantic-comedy Valentine's Day, which also starred Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway and Bradley Cooper.

The We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together singer also lent her voice to the character of Audrey in Dr Seuss animated project The Lorax this year, and she made a cameo appearance playing herself in her friend Miley Cyrus' 2009 film Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Joni is now 68 and well known for writing big hits such as Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock.
