Township film gets student Oscar nod

Cape Town – A fourth-year AFDA student has been nominated for a Student Academy Award in the Best Foreign Student Short Film category for his short film Kanye Kanye.

The film is directed by Miklas Manneke, 23, who will be jetting off to Hollywood along with the actors of the film to the awards show to be held in Los Angeles on 5 June.

Kanye Kanye is a romantic comedy and tells a township Romeo and Juliet tale about forbidden love between two 17-year-old township teenagers, Thomas and Thandi.

'It is an honour'

According to Manneke, who is studying for an honours degree in the motion picture medium at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA): "It is an honour for everyone involved in the making of Kanye Kanye, to be selected on this international platform to represent AFDA film school at the beginning of our careers."

"The wonder of film is the ability to change the world by creating another," said Manneke, who is thrilled with the nomination.

"It is great to know that my voice has had an impact on an audience and that I could bring a drop of enjoyment to the world from a South African point of view," he said.
