A Fast & Furious spin-off starring The Rock and Jason Statham gets the green light!

Cape Town – Earlier this year Channel24 Movies reported that there were rumours circulating about a Fast and the Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

Deadline reports that the spin-off has been given the greenlight and that Universal has scheduled it for release on 26 July 2019.

The film will centre on Deckard Shaw (Statham) teaming with Agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson).

Variety reports that while a director has not yet been signed Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) is on the list of candidates.

This news comes just 24 hours after it was revealed that the ninth instalment of the popular franchise has been pushed back to 2020. (Read more here)

But all is not well in the Fast family with co-actor Tyrese Gibson voicing his displeasure on Instagram.

In earlier posts he had asked Johnson not to move forward with the Hobbs spin-off.

On Thursday he called out Johnson for making the franchise about himself.

He wrote: "Congratulations to @TheRock and your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU - And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post - Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah..... it's about #TeamDewayne (sic)"
