Academy announces foreign language film shortlist for Oscars 2020 - SA's 'Knuckle City' doesn't make the cut

Cape Town - South Africa's official Oscar entry in the International Feature Film Category Knuckle City did not make the Academy shortlist for foreign language nominees.

Knuckle City is director Jahmil X. T. Qubeka's fourth feature film. Another one of Jahmil's films, Sew the Winter to My Skin, was also South Africa's 2018 Oscars submission. The film was not nominated but won several other awards.

On Monday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced shortlists in consideration for the 92nd Academy Awards in nine categories: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Visual Effects

Films that made the list include the much talked about South Korean drama Parasite by Bong Joon Ho's, Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodovar and Atlantics from Senegal directed by Mati Diop.

Nominations for Academy Awards will be announced on 13 January with the ceremony set to take place on 9 February.
