Cape Town - Aquaman, directed by James Wan, has become the highest-grossing DC Comics film in history.
The film starring Jason Momoa passed the $1.09bn mark at the worldwide box office over the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.
Aquaman takes the number one spot from Christopher Nolan's, The Dark Night which grossed $1.08bn in 2012.
Last week Momoa thanked his fans on Twitter for making the movie reach the billion dollar mark.

According to Deadline the studio has brought director, Wan back to work on the upcoming sequel.
The publication further reports that he will oversee development of the second movie including selecting writers. After seeing the script he will decide whether he will return to direct.
