Brittany Snow tells us she relates more to the bad side than the good side of her character in Someone Great

Cape Town – The latest offering on streaming service giant Netflix is changing the romantic comedy genre in an entertaining way.

Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Jennifer Robinson, Someone Great is a breath of fresh air that puts the focus on the beautiful and strong bond between the three leading ladies – instead of the exhausted rom-com recipe we have come to know.

REVIEW: This female-led, feel-good film will make you feel like 'Someone Great'

Chatting to one of the leading ladies, Brittany Snow - who plays Blair in the film – over the phone, Channel24 got inside details about what makes this female-led film so empowering, why everyone should watch it, and a little life advice for every 20-something-year-old.

While the first thing Brittany shares is that she hasn't been to South Africa just yet but it's on her list, there are more pressing things to chat about – like the undeniable chemistry between Brittany and her co-stars, Gina Rodriguez and DeWanda Wise.

Having been friends "since they were teenagers" Brittany reveals she was hesitant about how she would be accepted in Gina and DeWanda's group.

"I was a little hesitant to come into the group because I hadn't met them before we started filming but they instantly let me into their 'pact', and their energy was so infectious."

Brittany adds that their relationship made filming effortless, saying: "Everything that you see in the film in terms of us having fun and being best friends and all of that chemistry and our inside jokes was actually real. We gravitated towards each other instantly and just had this really crazy connection from the beginning."

Delving into her character a little more, the American actress admits she found it hard to relate to parts of the persona she played.

"You know, it was funny because when I read Blair, initially I thought she seems a little like a stick-in-the-mud," Brittany says before adding that Blair's alter ego is more like she is.

"Jennifer Robinson (the director) and I created this alter ego for her called 'Bad Blair' which is basically more Brittany than it is anything. It's a side of her personality that comes out when she drinks or when she parties, and I related a lot more to that Blair than 'Good Bair' - even though I probably should be a little bit more of 'Good Blair'."

Speaking about the similarities between the films she signs onto, including Pitch Perfect and Someone Great, Brittany says she looks at so much more than just the role on offer.

"It's not necessarily the role but more the intelligence of the comedy. It's rare to find a script that makes you laugh out loud and that makes you think and is something vastly different."

She adds that both Pitch Perfect and Someone Great, made her feel like "this is a different type of comedy and is elevated in a way that isn't dumbed down but actually making the viewer part of something bigger" – something she wants to be a part of.

While Someone Great focusses on themes of friendship and personal growth, there is an element of heartbreak.

The 33-year-old – who announced her engagement to boyfriend Tyler Stanaland in February – reveals she too experienced heartbreak when she was younger but sees it more as a learning curve now that she is older.

"I think when I was younger, I used to dream too small, and think, 'This is the best that I am going to get'. And what I've learned now in my thirties is that I could get so much better and have so much more – I just have to keep learning and keep trying and keep growing as a person. And although it's really painful, it's all preparing you for something better."

Adding to that, Brittany says the one piece of advice she would give her 20-something-year-old self is: "This is all education, this is all preparing you for something way better and bigger."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jennifer opens up about how her personal experiences formed the base of the film's subject matter.

"I wanted to make a deconstructed rom-com that’s way more com than rom, and that is really about women holding each other up and a woman choosing herself."

This is something Brittany hopes viewers will see and take away.

"Jen really wanted to create a romantic comedy where the woman was her own White Knight and was finally choosing herself. This movie is really about choosing yourself and choosing your career and your friends and your power first, over a man."

Sharing Jennifer, as well as the rest of her cast member's sentiments, Brittany concludes: "I would love guys and girls to watch this and feel empowered because they are choosing themselves – that's actually the most romantic thing of all."
