Cher had the best time playing Meryl Streep's mom in Mamma Mia sequel

Cape Town - Cher returns to the big screen in the Mamma Mia sequel.

In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again the 72-year-old plays Ruby, Donna's (Meryl Streep) mother.

With only a four year age difference Cher says that Meryl thinks it was hysterical and that they laughed about it a lot.

In another interview the actress revealed that she was terrified of joining the cast because the others knew each other so well.

The sequel, which opens in SA cinemas on Friday, takes place five years after the original.

Sophie (Amanda Seyfriend) will find out more about Donna's past, how she fronted The Dynamos, started her villa on the island from nothing, met each one of Sophie's dads, Sam, Bill and Harry (Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth), and raised a daughter.

The film will back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.

Lily James will play young Donna.
