CITY PRESS REVIEW: Bypass

Johannesburg - Bypass is a chilling thriller about a cardiac surgeon (Natalie Becker) who is a single mother faced with a difficult decision in saving her son’s life.

She is lured into the dark world of organ trafficking as the life of her son, who loses his liver in a freak accident, hangs in the balance. She strikes a deal for an organ on the black market, but finds herself trapped.

The film is shot in Cape Town, and the message behind it is a good one.

Bypass is both entertaining and educational, but there were a few areas of concern for me. I felt as if Becker’s character tries way too many times to escape her predicament. I understand letting suspense build, but too much can be corny.

This is director Shane Vermooten’s first full-length feature film. Though constrained by budget, he did an alright job with what he had and got the most out of his actors.

It was cool seeing Becker back at it and Hakeem Kae-Kazim in a slightly more serious role than we’re used to seeing him in.
