Fans of the lovable Bellas will be pleased to know that they’ve reunited ... but perhaps too soon. The third and final film in the Pitch Perfect trilogy starts with the girls struggling with life away from their a cappella group. Leads Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are back as Beca and Fat Amy, respectively. Beca quits her music producer job and Fat Amy struggles with her show, Fat Amy Winehouse. The rest of their bandmates are also in various predicaments and so a reunion tour materialises – seemingly out of nowhere.
The group is presented with the chance to open for DJ Khaled in Miami – that’s if they win a contest against bands that use instruments. His acting skills might not be the greatest, but DJ Khaled is quite an amusing guy.
The usual formula is applied, which may also be because director Trish Sie was involved in a similar bubblegum movie, Step Up: All In.
In Pitch Perfect 3, at first, the band is a little out of sync, mainly because the reunion is happening for the wrong reasons. Then they cast their fears aside and simply enjoy being together on stage and, of course, things get a little better for them. You know ... same old plot.
This is a very light watch with not much going on in the way of script, but it does have a few funny moments in the mix and the music used is arranged quite expertly. All through the film popular songs are performed, the highlights of which are Cheap Thrills by Sia and Britney Spears’ Toxic. Apparently the actors are actually singing – that’s impressive. But it doesn’t save the movie from its high level of lameness though. The story resolves itself in one scene of obvious dialogue. All the problems you thought the ladies had in the beginning are in fact not problems. I can’t explain that to you any better than that.
A favourite element in this movie is the hilarious banter shared between John Michael Higgins (John) and Elizabeth Banks (Gail) as they attempt to document the reunion of the Bellas.
If you have invested your time and allowed these cheery characters to grab hold of your viewing time, then you need to see this, just to complete your initial mistake.
