Crazy Rich Asians sequel in development

Cape Town – Jon M. Chu's comedy Crazy Rich Asians is about to get a sequel.

While it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet it is in development says the Entertainment Weekly.

The news comes after the film grossed $44.4 million at the Northern American box office in its first weekend on circuit. 

Based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel (Constance Wu) a young Asian-American woman who travels to meet her boyfriend's family (Henry Golding), only to find them to be among the richest in Singapore. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter Warner Bros plans to reunite the original team including director Jon M. Chu, prodcuers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson and screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. 

Sources say that Chu will do the follow-up after shooting Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, In the Heights which is scheduled to be released in 2020.

Crazy Rich Asians opens in SA cinemas on Friday, 24 August.
