Emma Stone cried for an hour on the set of her new film

Cape Town - Oscar-winning star Emma Stone has revealed she cried "for about an hour" on the set of The Favourite.

The actress had to film a scene in which she was aggressive with an animal.

The Favourite is an 18th century tragicomedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Stone, Rachel Wiesz and Olivia Colman.

According to the Associated Press the film, about two bitter rivals in Queen Anne’s court, upends the normal decorum of the period costume drama with menacing quips, flippant profanity and sexual degradation.

It was the opening film at the 56th New York Film festival on Friday which runs through to 14 October.

The film is schedule for release in SA on Friday, 18 January 2019.
