FEEL GOOD | SA author Kopano Matlwa's award-winning novel 'Coconut' coming to the big screen


Cape Town - South African author Kopano Matlwa's award-winning novel, Coconut is being turned into a movie.

Kopano's literary agents, The Pontas Agency, announced in November on Instagram that local production company Kiwi Films has acquired the film rights of the 2007 novel.

The book centres on two young women who grew up black in white suburbs and struggle with their identities.

The novel became a best-seller, and in 2007 it won the European Union Literary Award. In 2010 she was the joint winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa.

Producer Dineo Lusenga wrote on Twitter: "I read this incredible book #Coconut 10/11 years ago. At the time, I was still a TV & Film student at Wits just wanting to tell stories. Today, I have optioned film rights for this masterpiece by Kopano. Prepare your mind for when the things you prayed for, come true."

To which Kopano replied: "#Coconut is in great hands! Looking forward to this exciting journey with you."

Not only is Kopano an award-winning author she is also a medical doctor, the founder and director of the Transitions Foundation which improves the performance of young South Africans across the spectrum of educational needs, and the executive director of the Grow Great Campaign which aims to have a stunt free generation by 2030.

Her other novels include Spilt Milk and Period Pain/Evening Primrose.

In 2016 she was named one of South Africa's game changers and was featured on 21 Icons and in 2019 made the list of News24's 100 Young Mandelas of the Future.
