FIRST LOOK: Natalie Portman in new sci-fi thriller

Cape Town – Natalie Portman returns to the big screen in new sci-fi thriller, Annihilation.

The film is based on the book by Jeff VanderMeer the first in the The Southern Reach Trilogy.

It centres on Lena (Portman) a biologist who joins an expedition into a disaster zone after her husband (Oscar Isaac) disappears.

She joins an anthropologist (Gina Rodriguez), a psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and a surveyor (Tessa Thompson) who are the 12th group to explore Area X but the expedition goes horribly wrong.

Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive first look of Portman in the film.

In the picture Portman is seen examining the mouth of an alligator.

Writer-director Alex Garland told the EW that the alligator is the first strange thing they encounter.

"The alligator has physical elements to it that should not belong on an alligator. They’re starting to get their heads around how weird the place is," said Garland.
