Glitz, glam and misogyny at the premiere of She’s King

Johannesburg - Aglitzy and glamorous affair was held at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein for the launch of the intriguing movie She’s King.

Brought by Mzansi Magic, this film has quite the ensemble cast, complete with cameo appearances from the likes of Jerry Phele, DJ Shimza and Moonchild.

It was like watching the local equivalent of Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve. We’re talking about Gugu Zulu, Aubrey Poo, Khanyi Mbau, Mandisa Nduna, Sophie Ndaba, Mbuso Kgarebe and Sihle Mooi ... the list is seemingly endless. Oh … and it’s a musical.

Holding the premiere at the same place where the film was shot in parts was rather fresh. The Joburg Theatre is rather impressive and those in attendance matched this with their sharp and swanky dress-up. The Champagne flowed and the cast was all around looking very proud. Perhaps they should have held off on the bubbly until after they read our review on the feature.

The film’s producer, Nicola Rauch, urged the guests to “not record any parts of the film” as it will only be coming out in a month.

“We will confiscate them [cellphones]”, she said, but not even that finger-wagging warning could completely prevent the social scourge that is the influencers. They screamed loudly and spoke throughout the screening session – you know, all the things one shouldn’t do when watching a film.

A telling moment of the evening was when Gugu Zulu’s character was verbally abused by a man, to which some men in the audience cheered and applauded. When Zulu’s character decides to put an end to this abuse, all the women erupted in the rafters. It is the small moments that seem to scream the loudest. publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
