A 'Grease' prequel on its way – time to find out how Danny and Sandy really met

accreditation

Cape Town - It’s been more than four decades since Grease the movie sang and danced its way onto the big screen – and now a sequel is in the making.

And it seems fans will finally find out how bad boy Danny Zuko (Johan Travolta in the original) and blushing innocent Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) first met before reconnecting at Rydell High.

As per the lyrics of Summer Nights they sing to their friends, there are two versions of how their whirlwind romance started.

Sandy’s version is innocent and wistful, while Danny’s version of events is quite raunchy.

Some of the lyrics are:

Sandy: He got friendly holding my hand

Danny: She got friendly, down in the sand

Sandy: He was sweet, just turned eighteen

Danny: Well, she was good, you know what I mean...

The movie’s title will be Summer Loving, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The parts of young Sandy and Danny are yet to be cast – and it’s also not confirmed that it will definitely be a musical.

Scriptwriter John August, whose movie scripts include Big Fish and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, will write Summer Loving.

Last year, the stars of the original movie – including John (65), Olivia (70), Didi Conn (67), who played Frenchy, and Barry Pearl (69), who played T-birds member Doody – got together to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie.

Temple Hill, who brought us movies such as Maze Runner and First Man, is the producer of the prequel.

A sequel to the original movie was released some years after the 1978 Grease.

But Grease 2, with Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead, wasn’t nearly as successful as the original.

In 2016 Fox TV channel broadcast Grease Live!, a live performance of the stage production. With Julianne Hough as Sandy and Aaron Tveit as Danny, it won five Emmy Awards.

The soundtrack of the original Grease movie is still widely popular and it’s common to hear at least one Grease song played at social gatherings, like weddings, as it’s bound to get guests dancing.
