Cape Town - Dwayne Johnson’s Fast and the Furious spin-off has set its eyes on Idris Elba to play the main villain in the movie.

According to Deadline, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is reportedly on board to direct a script written by franchise regular Chris Morgan with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles as special agents.

There’s almost no plot detail available for the film other than the fact that it will be a spin-off to the franchise that controversially pushed the ninth instalment back but sources tell Variety that Elba’s character is the antagonist the duo will go up against.

Johnson confirmed the news on Instagram. Alongside a screenshot of the Variety article he wrote: "He’s bad, but I’m dangerous. Welcome my brotha @idriselba with tattooed and open arms to our #HobbsAndShaw Fast & Furious spin-off movie."

He continues: "For years we’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to work together and this film is the perfect one. Every great hero needs an even greater villain. Cue the music... I’ve been waiting."

Fox news says the existence of the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off film caused a stir among the cast of the flagship franchise, with Vin Diesel reportedly in a feud with Johnson over it.

Tyrese Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce, also announced last year that he would not be part of the franchise if Johnson was in the ninth feature film.

Elba is no stranger to our screens especially since he was a hit on Long Walk to Freedom.

He’s also played a villain before in the, Star Trek Beyond

Earlier this week Johnson announced that The Crown actress Vanessa Kirby also joined the cast
