City Press film review: Baywatch
Johannesburg - Watching this nonsense, I started wondering how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has become one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. This homie plays the same upstanding buff dude every time. I’m tired, fam. There’s no difference between him as Luke Hobbs in the Fast and the Furious franchise and as Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch.
In this movie version of the original TV series, The Rock is joined by Zac Efron, who is still kind of a heart-throb, but is also a clown who messes up a lot as muscle-bound moron Matt Brody. The Rock’s Mitch calls Efron’s character everything from N*Sync to High School Musical.
Like in the TV show, hot bodies and slow-motion running is still the order of the day. Kelly Rohrbach gives a playful portrayal of CJ Parker, the character originally played by Pamela Anderson, who makes a small cameo, rocking up in super slow-mo without saying a word.
This is one of those movies that is so bad, it could almost pass as enjoyable. Almost.
Ronnie (Jon Bass), a new life guard squad recruit really kills it with the comedic timing. If it wasn’t for this brother and Efron doing silly things, what we’d be left with is an episode of Sunset Beach. Remember that one? Hella dry.
The local police officer Sergeant Ellerbee (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is also just too funny. It it wasn’t for him, I would have walked out.
The music seemed mad loud in this film, but I guess when the script is as weak as this, you have to make a plan. I really wasn’t feeling the whole The Rock wearing flip-flops thing, I mean, come on.
David Hasselhoff, who played the original Mitch, also makes a cameo. He offers advice to The Rock’s character, from one Mitch to another. Don’t go spend your cash on this, just wait for it to come to the small screen and, on a day when you really have nothing better to do, hit it up.
Baywatch offers nothing more than a paper-thin plot and some ridiculously hot beach bodies.
