The upcoming Paramount comedy Lovebirds starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae will now be released on Netflix.

The film was set to be released theatrically on 3 April in the US (24 April in SA) but due to the coronavirus pandemic it was pulled from the schedule.

Deadline reports that the studio is finalising a deal with the streaming service and that it will be a global release and that the streaming date will be announced soon.

Lovebirds was set to premiere at the SXSW Festival on 6 March before the festival was cancelled. The cast had decided not to attend the festival for safety reasons.

The film centres on a couple who unintentionally get embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme – and hilarious – circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

Other film studios have also decided to release some of their recent cinema releases earlier on streaming channels. Movies include Frozen II (iTunes), Emma, Bird of Prey, The Invisible Man, and the Hunt, reports CNN.

They've also pushed back the release of major blockbusters such as No Time To Die, A Quiet Place, Mulan, Peter Rabbit 2, The Fast and the Furious 9, The Secret Garden, The New Mutants, and Antlers.

A number of movies that are in production have also gone on a production break due to the global pandemic.
