Jason Statham to battle prehistoric shark in new movie

Los Angeles - Jason Statham will fight a prehistoric shark in his latest movie.

The 48-year-old actor is in talks to take on the lead role in Meg, the big-screen adaptation of Steve Alten's science fiction novel MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror
It tells the story of the attempts to kill a Megalodon, one of the largest and most powerful predators in history and previously believed to be extinct, which has been killing swimmers along the coast of China.

The Megalodon is the 60-foot prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark.

Jason will most likely play Jonas Taylor, a deep sea diver working for the United States Navy on a top-secret dive who survives an encounter with the Megalodon and struggles to prove it is real even as it continues to claim a number of victims.

Meg, dubbed Jaws in China, will be directed by Jon Turbeltaub.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Belle Avery and Colin Wilson are producing the film which is a co-production between Warner Bros and China-based Gravity.

This is Jason's first leading role in some time; he has most recently worked on ensemble projects including the Expendables and Fast & Furious franchises and co-starred with Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law in Spy
