Jennifer Lopez to play real-life drug lord in 'The Godmother'

Cape Town - For her next role, Jennifer Lopez will play Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, also known as The Godmother.

According to Variety, she will also produce the drama which she is considering making her directorial debut.

The story will follow the life of Blanco, who outsmarted the men around her to rise from an impoverished childhood in Colombia to become one of the world's biggest drug lords. Blanco, who was murdered in 2012, was reportedly worth more than $2 billion and was a key figurehead in Miami's Cocaine Cowboy Wars.

"I've been forever fascinated by the story of Griselda Blanco and jumped at the chance to play her onscreen. She is all the things we look for in storytelling and dynamic characters — notorious, ambitious, conniving, chilling," Jennifer said in a statement.

This will be the 50-year-old's third project with STX Entertainment which she collaborated with on the romantic comedy Second Act and the upcoming stripper revenge film, Hustlers.
