Jim Caviezel to reprise his role as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ sequel

Cape Town – Fourteen years ago Jim Caviezel played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

The actor has confirmed that he is set to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel.

The planned film is set to centre on the resurrection of Christ.

Speaking to USA Today about the film Caviezel said that there are things that will shock the audience.

While he remained tight-lipped about the details he said he is inspired after speaking to Gibson who will once again direct.

"I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good," said Caviezel.

The first film raked in a whopping $600m worldwide at the box office.

Gibson first confirmed the sequel The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection during an interview with Stephen Colbert in 2016.

Speaking about the resurrection he said it was a big subject.

"It's more than a single event, it was an amazing event and to underpin it with the things around is really the story."

In an interview with USA Today Gibson told the publication: "We’re trying to craft this in a way that’s cinematically compelling and enlightening so that it shines new light, if possible, without creating some weird thing."

Before Caviezel returns as Jesus though, he can be seen in the new biblical film Paul, Apostle of Christ in which he will play Luke.

The film releases in cinemas on 6 April.
