Dwayne Johnson in a scene in Rampage

Director: Brad Peyton

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris

Based on the arcade game of the same name, Rampage showcases the incredible bond between primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) and albino silverback gorilla George. When these beasts start rampaging through the city, the only people who truly know how to stop them are Kate and Davis.

The film is underpinned by themes of friendship and sacrifice, while staying light-hearted enough to have you giggling at the witty characters.

Headed by Hollywood’s highest-paid actor, you can be sure this film will rake in large sums at the box office. However, Johnson’s performance lets us down, with his playing the same character we’ve seen before.

He’s once again typecast as the friendly smiling guy who will beat up anyone who messes with his people or his “tribe”.

There are representational issues within the film too, with a male-dominated cast and a lack of a strong character in Naomie Harris.

Claire Wyden (Malin Åkerman) and Lizzie – who may not completely count as a female role – complete the sum of women in the movie, leaving little to no room for women to relate to any of the characters.

I felt like the story line was similar to that of Jurassic World, with the giant gorilla similar to King Kong and the crocodile like those in Lake Placid, and Peyton just put them on a mutated scale.

The witty dialogue, though, makes Rampage a worthwhile and fun film experience. publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
