Cape Town - Mark Hamill has been named as the 2019 Comic-Con Icon.
Organisers surprised him with the award while he was taking part in a panel discussion on the Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
According to BBC News, the award is given to those who have brought comic book and arts culture to broad audiences. George Lucas and Stan Lee are previous recipients of the prize.
In his speech, he thanked the fans saying: "If it weren't for you, I certainly wouldn't be standing here. I started coming to these cons years before I met George [Lucas]."
"I remember I was at the con when they said did you hear there's going to be 5000 people this year? And we were like wow, how many women? So thank you very much. I want you to remember I am your buddy until the end."
Mark is well known for his role as Luke Skywalker, in the Star Wars films and for his voice acting in animation and video games, especially for his role as the Joker. Recently he was the voice of Chucky in the Child's play reboot.
