Pixar's new short film Out features the studio's first gay lead character.

The 10-minute short film debuted on the Disney+ streaming service on Friday.

According to CNN, the story centres on Greg, who is afraid to tell his parents that he is gay. When his parents surprise him with a visit to help him move, he is worried that they might see a picture of him and his boyfriend. With the help of some magic, Greg swops bodies with his dog during his parents visit.

The film is part of the Pixar SparkShort series - which is designed to discover new storytellers and explore new storytelling techniques - and was written by Steven Clay Hunter (Toy Story, Finding Dory).

On the importance of the character and the story, Glaad director on entertainment media, Jeremy Blacklow, said: "By centering on a young gay man, Out just raised the bar for inclusion in kids and family programming," reports the New York Times
