Since the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, there have been rumours of co-stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron clashing on set, Fox News reports.
In the epic sci-fi thriller the actors portray Max and Furiosa, two warriors who work together to save a group of women enslaved as wives to a monstrous dictator.
Although Charlize and Tom’s characters were a great team in the movie, their offscreen relationship was somewhat different.
In 2017 co-star Zoë Kravitz revealed to Watch What Happens Live host, Andy Cohen that the two had butted heads.
"Yeah, they didn’t get along," Zoë said. "It’s like summer camp, you know? At some point everyone has some kind of issue with somebody because it’s just the way people are."
The New York Times recently brought the cast back together for a discussion regarding the movie, which gave Charlize and Tom the chance to clear the air.
"In retrospect I didn’t have enough empathy to really, truly understand what he must have felt like to step into Mel Gibson’s shoes," Charlize said.
"That’s frightening! I think because of my own fear we were putting up walls to protect ourselves instead of saying to each other, 'This is scary for you, and it’s scary for me, too. Let’s be nice to each other.'
"In a weird way we were functioning like our characters: Everything was about survival."
Tom also admits the pressure was overwhelming for them both at times and this made it difficult to perform on set.
"I think in hindsight I was in over my head in many ways," Tom said.
"The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced, partner in me.
"That’s something that can’t be faked. I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion.
"Because of how much detail we were having to process and how little control one had in each new situation, and how fast the takes were – tiny snippets of story moments were needed to make the final cut work – we moved fast, and it was at times overwhelming. One had to trust that the bigger picture was being held together."
Despite the fact they didn’t get along, the stars kept things professional and the film went on to rake in more than $375 million (then R5,8 billion) at the box office as well as six Oscars.
