Cape Town – There’s a new Ocean in charge in cinemas this weekend as the much anticipated spin-off of the Ocean’s franchise hits the big screen.
Sandra Bullock leads an all-star female cast in this heist comedy.
It follows a group of women, led by Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of Danny Ocean, who plan a highly sophisticated heist of the Met Gala in New York City.
Also showing: Wes Anderson’s latest stop-motion animation, a heart-wrenching British romantic drama, an Afrikaans buddy-cop comedy and Jason Momoa fights off a group of drug runners.
Here are the 5 new films releasing in SA today:
Movie: Ocean’s 8
Our rating: 5/5
Short review: Ocean’s 8 isn’t a remake of the all-male Ocean’s film series; it’s a whole new cinematic world that we loved getting lost in.
Movie: Isle of Dogs
Our rating: 4/5
Short review: Wes Anderson’s ninth film is near perfect in some respects – the stop-motion animation, the characters are relatable wackadoos and the choice of voice actors who play them freakishly spot-on.
Movie: On Chesil Beach
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: Saoirse Ronan is the best part of this movie that is so heartbreakingly sad I honestly don’t know if you should go watch it.
Movie: Thys & Trix
Our rating: 4/5
Short review: Thys & Trix is an Afrikaans buddy-cop movie where slapstick is used in measured doses instead of the usual Schuster-esque shenanigans you see in Afrikaans comedies.
Movie: Braven
Our rating: 1/5
Short review: Braven is yet another wholly uninteresting and mind-numbingly boring action thriller that really has no business taking up precious space at your local cinema.
