SA EXCLUSIVE: Chris Messina on bulking up and working with Ben Affleck in gangster flick

On 10 January 2017, Channel24 flew to London to meet the cast of the soon-to-be released crime film, Live by Night. Bronwyn McKay sits down with Chris Messina to find out more about what went on behind-the-scenes of the 1920s gangster flick.

London – He’s strikingly handsome, professional and has a soothing voice that has a weird calming effect on you.

Sitting opposite Chris Messina in the luxury suite of the 5-star Claridges Hotel is both exciting and strangely relaxing.

He speaks with ease and confidence about his role in the gangster crime drama, Live by Night and his role as Dion Bartolo.

This isn’t Chris’ first time working with Ben Affleck. The two also starred alongside each other in the Oscar-winning film, Argo

“I had a great time with him on Argo. It’s a real ease working with him and we have similar taste in movies and we just became friends.  I mean he’s such a lovely guy and just a fantastic director,” Chris praises Ben who not only starred in the film, but also directed it.

When preparing for his role as Joe Coughlin’s (played by Ben) right hand man, Chris put on a whopping 18kg to bulk up and even had to learn how to handle guns like a real 1920s gangster.
