Star Wars faces off against Mad Max at Critics' Choice

Los Angeles - Star Wars: The Force Awakens might have been shut out of the Oscar best picture race, but the box office behemoth will get a shot to compete with heavyweights like The Martian and The Revenant at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday night.

Mad Max: Fury Road has a leading 13 nominations.

Nominees and winners are voted on by the Broadcast Film Critics' Association, and winners have often reflected the Academy's choices.

This is the first year the Critics' Choice Awards will combine movies and television nominees into one ceremony, similar to the Golden Globes.

Silicon Valley star TJ Miller is hosting the ceremony.
