Ster-Kinekor cinemas are now closed

Ster-Kinekor closed all cinemas nationwide on Tuesday, 24 March.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement of a national lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

In a statement to Channel24, the cinema chain said all Ster-Kinekor cinemas will be closed from 24 March to 16 April 2020 and that they will reopen after lockdown or otherwise directed by the government.

"We at Ster-Kinekor care about the health and wellbeing of our customers and staff, we continue to encourage all South Africans to follow all health, hygiene and other legal regulations as communicated by the by the South African Government," said Ryan Williams, Chief Executive Office, Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

"We will closely monitor recommendations of the World Health Organisation and the Department of Health; we look forward to inviting everyone to once again enjoy experiencing Great Moments at Ster-Kinekor".

On Monday the Labia, an independent cinema in Cape Town announced they are temporarily closing their doors for three weeks and on Tuesday Nu Metro cinemas closed with immediate effect.

The latest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in South Africa is 709.
