Surprise! Samuel L Jackson loves cats - and 9 other facts from Captain Marvel

Cape Town – One of most anticipated movies of the year, Captain Marvel opens in cinemas on Friday.

Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers played by Brie Larson as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.

Ahead of the film’s release here are some interesting facts to get you even more amped up.

HERE ARE 10 FUN FACTS ABOUT CAPTAIN MARVEL

1. A number of firsts

Captain Marvel features the first stand-alone, female-franchise, title character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Anna Boden, who directs the film with her longtime directing partner Ryan Fleck, is the first female director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It also the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film set in the 1990s and predates all the other Marvel Studios’ films except for the first Captain America.

2. Thousands of pounds of sand

One world that production designer Andy Nicholson brought to life in the greater Los Angeles environs was Torfa. Nicholson and his team took an existing sand mine and quarry in Simi Valley and, with the help of thousands of pounds of sand, transformed it into a visually dynamic setting.

3. A new mall?

For one of the Los Angeles scenes, filmmakers took an old strip mall in North Hollywood and built a new façade, including a Radio Shack, a Blockbuster and a dry cleaners. The location looked so authentic that people actually drove up to go into the location, not realising that it was really a movie set!

4. Once in a lifetime training experience

Brie and Lashana Lynch, who plays fellow test pilot Maria Rambeau, visited Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas for some once-in-a-lifetime training and experiences in an F-16 fighter jet.

5. A real-life female fighter pilot

Brie also was able to meet and spend time with Brigadier General Jeannie Marie Leavitt, who became the United States Air Force’s first female fighter pilot in 1993 and was the first woman to command a USAF combat fighter wing.

6. Eight Captain Marvel suits

Costume designer Sanja Hays’ team made eight Captain Marvel suits for Brie Larson. For the hero suits, the main fabric is leather with a special, pearlized blue finish that has a sheen when the light hits it.

7. The purrfect match

The filmmakers auditioned several different cats to play the part of a feline character named Goose and ended up with a cat named Reggie. Reggie came with a team of three other cats — Archie, Gonzo and Rizzo — who all specialised in different tricks.

8. A surprise cat lover

To everyone’s surprise, Samuel L. Jackson was great with the cats. No one knew that he was such a cat lover!

9. Intense physical training regime

Brie took training for the role of Captain Marvel very seriously. For five days a week she did two to four hours of training, which was a combination of boxing, kick-boxing, Judo, wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. The actress also worked her way to lifting over 225 pounds in deadlifts, 400-pound hip thrusts and even pulling a jeep down the road—a tremendous achievement for an actress who had never done much strength training!

10. Turning back the clock

To create the younger Nick Fury and Agent Coulson, the filmmakers called upon visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend and the artists at the visual effects house Lola to transform the actors back to the mid-1990s versions of their characters. It was very helpful that both Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg both look great for their respective ages!
