The 4 new films in SA cinemas reviewed

Cape Town – Espionage, horror, thrill and romance – there’s something for everyone to see at cinemas this weekend.

Claire Foy trades the crown for a gun in The Girl in the Spider’s Web. In the sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lisbeth Salander finds herself caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.

Also showing: An ensemble cast of A-listers find themselves in run-down hotel in a neo-noir thriller, a multigenerational love story and a war horror in which soldiers have to fight the undead.

Here are 4 new films releasing in SA cinemas:

Movie: The Girl in the Spider’s Web

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: By recasting Lisbeth Salander as an almost superheroic action hero in a full-on spy film, the massively misjudged Girl in the Spider’s Web is less a resurrection of the Millennium franchise than the film that may finally bury it.

Movie: Bad Times at the El Royale

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Bad Times at the El Royale may be the unusual Hollywood thriller to not live up to the real-life drama of its pseudo setting.

Movie: Life Itself

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: Nothing much in Life Itself feels like life itself. It is too polished, too winking, too big and too much to be all that relatable, even with an appealing cast.

Movie: Overlord

Our rating: 4/5

Short review: Overlord is excellent in that its tempo builds continuously and the action hardly ever dies down enough for viewers to relax or lose focus.
