The 5 highest grossing local films of 2016

Cape Town – It was a good year for local movies at the box office. 

In fact the two highest grossing movies broke local box office records.

It definitely proves that cinemagoers have an appetite for well-produced local fare, and that local is lekker.

Ster-Kinekor provided us with the top grossing films at the cinema. 

5. 'n Paw Paw vir my Darling

The Koos Roets drama based on Jeanne Goosen’s novel and that tells the story of the Beeslaer family of 24 Frik du Preez Street in Damnville, is charmed audiences with its unique humour and raked in R4.1m.

4. Mrs Right Guy

The local romantic comedy starring Dineo Moeketsi held its own against blockbusters like X-Men: Apocalypse, Angry Birds and Alice Through The Looking Glass raking in R4.4m.

3. Vir Die Voëls

The Huisgenoot movie to celebrate their centenary comes in at third place. The film is still on circuit and has raked in R4.5m. 

2. Happiness is a Four-Letter Word

The local romance based on the award-winning novel by Cynthia Jele had a record breaking run. It drew in drawing in bigger audiences than Ocar winnes Spotlight, Room, The Danish Girl. It raked in R13.3m.

1. Vir Altyd

The dream team of Ivan Botha and Donnalee Roberts struck gold with this romantic comedy. In the opening week alone they banked R4 727 479. After it’s full run on circuit it raked in R15.6m.
