Cape Town – Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix's controversial Joker releases in SA cinemas this weekend.

Set in 1981, the origin story shows the Joker as a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime.

The much-hyped standalone film billed as a "character study" of Batman's nemesis has raised concerns that it might send out the wrong message to viewers. In September the families of the Aurora theatre mass shooting wrote an open letter expressing concern.

Last week the US Army issued a reportedly issued a warning to members of the armed forces about the potential threat of a mass shooting at screenings of Joker.

Also showing: Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling take on the world of late-night television in a woke comedy.
