Cape Town - South Africans felt a little deflated this week when Oscar-shortlisted local film Inxeba (The Wound) didn’t get a nomination for best foreign language film.
But there’s another titbit of Oscar news that might cheer you up.
The animated film Revolting Rhymes has been announced as one of five productions nominated in the category of best animated short film.
It was animated by South African film and entertainment company Triggerfish.
Based on Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake’s classic book, the film was directed by Germany’s Jakob Schuh and Jan Lachauer, co-directed by Bin-Han To, and animated at Triggerfish in Cape Town and at Magic Light in Berlin.
Mike Buckland, head of production at Triggerfish, said: “We feel immense gratitude towards our insanely hard-working, generous and talented crew, who fully deserve this recognition and knowledge that their work stands up there with the best in the world.
“We’re hoping Revolting Rhymes’ success will inspire many more Africans to enter the animation industry, which is growing rapidly here, but still not fast enough to keep up with demand.
“And we can’t wait for South African audiences to finally be able to see Revolting Rhymes when it comes to Showmax in the near future.”
The nomination is the latest in a string of accolades for Revolting Rhymes, which includes a Cristal award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and a best animation award at the Bafta Children’s Awards.
Triggerfish was established in 1996 and is responsible for two of the top five highest-grossing South African feature films – Zambezia (2012) and Khumba (2013). We’re holding thumbs!
As a stop-frame animation studio, Triggerfish has produced multiple commercials for South African ad agencies.
From 1998 to 2008, Triggerfish produced animation for Sesame Workshop for the South African version of Sesame Street, Takalani Sesame, and for the US domestic and international versions of the preschool children’s programme.
