The Rock gives an Oscar worthy acceptance speech for Razzie award

Cape Town – The Oscars weren’t the only awards handed out this weekend.

The annual Razzies ceremony which honours the worst films of the year took place on Saturday.

Among the winners was Baywatch which won a newly created award, “Special Rotten Tomatoes Award: The Razzie Nominee So Bad You Loved It!” (See all the winners here)

The award is the result of an online poll held in conjunction with the review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Dwayne Johnson, who both starred in and produced the film based on the popular 90s television series, graciously accepted the award.

In his Oscar worthy acceptance speech Johnson first congratulated his friends who were nominated at the Academy Awards.

He then went on to say: “I am also excited because I was just informed that I too am bringing home the gold tonight. No, not an Oscar — maybe one day. But a Razzie.

“Here’s the cool thing: The movie was so bad that they actually had to create another category.

“The new category is a movie so rotten you eventually fell in love with it. I’m not kidding, which means the shit sandwich you’ve been eating is so bad that you eventually started to like it. Look, we made Baywatch with the best of intentions, it didn’t work out like that, but I humbly and graciously accept my Razzie.”

He ended the speech by thanking the fans and critics, “at the end of the day ‘movie you so rotten you eventually fell in love with it’ that’s just the way love goes.”

The official Razzies twitter account responded to his acceptance speech saying: “It takes a Big Man @TheRock to pick up @therazzieAwards and own his bad! That's love.”
