TV AND MOVIE GUIDE: Spend the weekend with these A-listers

If you want to go out the weekend before payday or stay in, there is some great entertainment lined up on the small and big screen.

From Anne Hathaway, to David Oyelowo, to Jim Carrey in cinemas – the weekend TV guide is filled with A-listers.

Les Miserables – Showmax

Period aficionados can now binge-watch the entire BBC series as it comes to Showmax. Adapted from Victor Hugo's classic novel, this non-musical version stars Dominic West, David Oyelowo and Lily Collins. Lauded by The Guardian as "a rich feast", the series delves deeper into the characters and their backstories than ever before, breathing new life, not a much-loved classic.

Gentefied – Netflix

In this badass bilingual series about family, community, brown love, and the displacement that disrupts it all, three Mexican-American cousins struggle to chase the American Dream, even while that same dream threatens the things they hold most dear: their neighbourhood, their immigrant grandfather, and the family taco shop.

The Last Thing He Wanted – Netflix

Veteran D.C. journalist Elena McMahon (Anne Hathaway) abandons the 1984 campaign trail out of a misguided sense of duty to her father, Dick McMahon (Willem Dafoe). Guilted into running a dangerous fool's errand on his behalf, Elena leverages the moment to pursue her own investigation but instead gets tipped into the confounding centre of the very intrigue she's trying to expose.

Little Women – In cinemas

Jo March reflects on the story of her life. The four young women each determined to live life on her own terms have a story both timeless and timely. (Read our review here)

Just Mercy – In cinemas

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. (Read our review here)
