Two free movie screenings at the Cape Town International Film festival

Cape Town - The 2018 edition of the Cape Town International Film Market and Festival will take place from 9 to 19 October at venues across the V & A Waterfront.

Festival screenings are open to the public and will run from 10 – 19 October at various cinemas within the V&A Waterfront, including TWO FREE family-friendly films at the Amphitheatre on 13 and 14 October.

Environmental Short Films

These short films from across South Africa showcase some of the environmental issues prevalent today in South Africa as well as some of the solutions that are being driven by young people in their communities. These inspiring films are perfect for the whole family and are both educational and entertaining.

Still I Rise

Most vultures are attacked by people, but for many different reasons. Some believe that vulture brains and eyes are good for making Muti, while farmers also poison vultures because they believe that they kill their lambs. But what most of them don’t know is that vultures are actually vital for the ecosystem. This is a story that puts aside misconceptions and follows those that take care of vultures. They share with us how vultures minimise the spread of diseases and the importance of releasing them back into the wild.

Spots in the Mountain

Spots in the Mountain is a short environmental documentary film about the remaining iconic leopards in the fynbos mountains of the Cape. It unpacks the importance of these few rare predators that are left in the wild and how they help sustain a balanced ecosystem. The Cape Leopards are an endangered species and the environmental organization Cape Leopard Education Project aims to reconnect people with their natural world and foster a greater respect and sense of caring between them and wildlife.

World Wild Life : Marine Program – Save our Ocean

Poaching and over-fishing are some of the challenges facing South African fishing communities like those of Fish Hoek and Kommetjie in the Western Cape. These communities have relied on the ocean for both commercial and subsistence fishing for many years but now things have changed, fish is getting extinct. Lucille, a young lady from a small fishing community of Ocean View has dedicated her life to fighting poachers and raising awareness about the dangers of over fishing this is her story.

SANCCOB: Guardian of the Ocean

Guardians of the Ocean is a documentary film that takes a look at the African Penguins that are facing extinction in the decade to come. The film also looks at SANCCOB and their interventions aimed at saving this endangered species. In the film, the SANCCOB team takes us up close to the penguins and demonstrates the challenges in working with them. Ultimately, the big question is will SANCCOB be able to save the African Penguins?

The Adventures of Supermama 
From 15:00 on the 13th and 14th, guests can enjoy the hilarious South African movie, The Adventures of SuperMama, directed by Karen Van Schalkwyk.
The movie tells the story of Doris Ratabane, a large, stubborn and beautiful woman with a passion for fighting crime in her community. Doris's life changes forever one day when she meets the enigmatic Mr Hung and decides to learn the ancient art of Kung Fu & which completely baffles her husband Jabulani. The training is tough but encouragement arrives in the form of Tiny, a charming ten-year-old boy who lives at the back of her property. Against the advice of Mr Hung, Doris stubbornly declares that she is ready to fight crime. After a couple of dramatic missteps, the crime-fighting Supermama finally achieves success. However, the public success goes to her head, and when Mr Hung warns his protege about her arrogance, Doris will hear none of it. Eventually, her dramatic adventures bring her head-to-head with a notorious heist gang, leading to danger for all involved. But can Supermama overcome her pride and bring the gang to justice?
