Cape Town – When the 2019 Golden Globe nominees were announced on Thursday, two South African-born stars each scooped a nomination.

Charlize Theron, born in Benoni, and Troye Sivan, born in Johannesburg, both received nominations at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards.

Charlize is being recognised for her role as Marlo in the comedy-drama, Tully. In an interview with Deadline, Charlize explained that her role in the indie movie was tougher physically than her roles in Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde.

The 43-year-old actress gained almost 22kg for the role in which she plays a New York suburbanite who gives birth to her third child.

Singer-songwriter Troye Sivan bagged a nomination for best original song in a motion picture for his track Revelation from the film Boy Erased. Troye reacted to the news on Twitter with: "WHAT THE FUCJ.[sic]"

In an interview with former Miss Universe, Margaret Gardiner about the film Troye says that despite having lived across the globe he still calls South Africa home. "All my family still live there. All my extended family too. I have so many amazing memories of South Africa. It’s such a special place in my heart. When people ask I always tell them I’m Australian but born in South Africa."

Boy Erased is a 2018 American biographical drama film based on Garrard Conley's 2016 memoir of the same name and tells the story of Jared Eamons, the son of a small-town Baptist pastor, who must overcome the fallout after being outed as gay to his parents.

The critically acclaimed local film, Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story, was South Africa’s official entry in the best foreign film category. It sadly didn’t make the final list of five films which included, Capernaum (Lebanon), Girl (Belguim), Never Look Away (Germany), Roma (Mexico), and Shoplifters (Japan).

The 2019 Golden Globe Awards, which will be hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, will take place on Sunday, 6 January.
