Cape Town – In On the Basis of Sex Felicity Jones plays trailblazer Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The drama is inspired by the true story of a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg - then a struggling attorney and new mother – who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights throughout her career.

When Ruth takes on a ground-breaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg (Armie Hammer), she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination.

Speaking about playing the Supreme Court Justice Academy Award nominee Felicity says she didn't take it lightly to play someone as respected as Ginsburg is.

"We all know Ruth Bader Ginsburg now but my responsibility was to play her when she was in her 20s and 30s and finding out who that woman was then that led to the icon we know now as RBG," she explains.

The film also chronicles the storybook-like romance between Ruth and Marty, a partnership that succeeded both personally and professionally.

Their marriage was an equal partnership on every level which in the 50s was a very rare thing.

On the Basis of Sex opens in SA cinemas on Friday, 25 January.
