WATCH: Hugh Masekela remembers getting a trumpet from Louis Armstrong

Cape Town – Legendary South African musician Hugh Masekela died after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. 

The music maestro is considered the “father of South African jazz.”

In a short film by Adrian Steirn for the Icons 21 series Masekela talks about receiving a trumpet for Louis Armstrong in 1956, speaking to imaginary friends in Zulu in Central Park and tells the inside story of how he got his nickname Slow Poison.
