WATCH: The Joker like you've never seen him before in new teaser trailer!

Cape Town – The first teaser for The Joker has just been released.

In the chilling clip we see Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) working as a clown on the street, helping his mother take a bath and finally going off the rails as he becomes the Joker.

The clip first made its debut at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Director Todd Phillips said that although a lot has been written about the film it hasn't been accurate, reports AP. 

"But that's what happens when you set out to make an origin story about a character who doesn't have an origin," he said of Batman's nemesis. When asked what genre it is he said, it's a tragedy.

A SA release date for the film has yet to be released.
