Cape Town – The trailer for the award-winning local film, Poppie Nongena has just been released.

Based on the novel by Elsa Joubert, it tells the moving true-life story of an ordinary woman in extraordinary circumstances. Houseworker and resilient Afrikaans-speaking iXhosa mother, Poppie Nongena, desperately tries to keep her family together by navigating the day-to-day struggle against inhumane government pass laws in 1970's South Africa.

The film directed by Christiaan Olwagen stars Clementine Mosimane, Nomsa Nene, Anna-Mart van der Merwe and Chris Gxalaba.

The drama had its premiere at the Silwerskerm Festival in August where it went on to win 12 awards including Best Feature Film, Best Script, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Ensemble Cast.
