Cape Town – The origin story of everyone’s favourite scoundrel Han Solo opens in South African cinemas this weekend.
During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Also showing: A drama about a young autistic woman, a British romantic-comedy and a summer flick about three friends partying in Ibiza on Netflix.
Here are the 4 new releases in SA:
Movie: Solo: A Star Wars Story
Our rating: 5/5
Short review: Despite production drama and a change in director halfway through, Solo: A Star Wars Story delivered a Western spectacle that fits perfectly with the cowboy character of our favourite scoundrel.
Movie: Please Stand By
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: Please Stand By is a sweet look at life with Asperger’s Syndrome, but does not push enough boundaries for it to be memorable.
Movie: Finding Your Feet
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: Finding Your Feet is exactly as cliché and as overly simplistic as you would expect this film to be but it's also as warm-hearted and witty as you could hope.
Movie: Ibiza (New on Netflix only)
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: If Ibiza, a sweet and silly romantic comedy, was on the big screen, it might have pushed itself toward bigger gags. But the smaller scale works well in a genre that increasingly feels like a gross-out scene arms race.
