The newly released trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is already whetting the appetites of fans of Peter Jackson's revolutionary The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Hobbit, a prequel novel by JRR Tolkien, has been split into two films which will be released over two years.
An Unexpected Journey will be the fourth film in the franchise and explores the journey of hobbit Bilbo Baggins (played by Ian Holm) and how he came to possess the ring that he later passed onto Frodo Baggins, whose adventure with the ring was explored in The Lord of the Rings.
'My precious'
The two and a half-minute trailer shows an elderly Bilbo writing a letter that tells Frodo about his own adventures. It then flashes back to a younger Bilbo (now played by Martin Freeman) being approached by wizard Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellan) to leave behind the comfort of the Shire and undertake a journey across Middle Earth with a motley group of dwarves.
Along the way Bilbo meets the elves for the first time, finds the ring of power and encounters the corrupted Gollum (Andy Serkis), who is looking for his "precious".
The look and feel of The Hobbit readily recalls The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the release of the first film in the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, this month.
While The Hobbit will introduce many new faces to the fantasy franchise - including Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, Lee Pace as King Thranduil and Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel - the Hobbit movies will also reunite much of the cast from the original trilogy: Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Christopher Lee among others.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is expected to be released in South Africa on December 14 2012, followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again a year later.
