WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
When their father passes away, four grown siblings gather with their collection of husbands, wives, children and grandchildren. Together, this crazy family needs to survive itself for three days, under one roof, before they spread their father’s ashes and part ways again. As the siblings re-examine their shared history and their tattered relationships, they learn how miserable they’ve become and how they can no longer blame anyone else for their own decisions.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
This heart-warming movie about family and personal struggle transcends racial, and cultural boundaries.
Written and directed by Bianca Isaac, the movie stars Leeanda Reddy, Lillette Dubey, Jailoshini Naidoo, Kajal Bagwandeen, Rahul Brijnath, Jonathan Boynton-Lee and Zakeeya Patel.
Reuniting with family – whether it be over the festive period, a wedding or a funeral – can sometimes lead to a high-stress situation.
Let’s be honest, sometimes even a coffee date can be taxing.
As we grow older our views, interests and lifestyles change; and we often find ourselves relating less to our family and the people we were once very close with.
Perhaps you’re scared of voicing your opinions in front of your family because you don’t share the same views, or you’re scared to ask for help because you don’t want your family to judge the life decisions you’ve made?
3 Days to Go tackles this universal phenomenon when siblings Janet (Leeanda Reddy), Melissa (Jailoshini Naidoo), Amy (Kajal Bagwandeen) and Riki (Rahul Brijnath) reunite after their father suddenly dies; and they are forced to re-examine their life decisions and romantic relationships.
Having led very separate lives, this tragedy brings out the very worst in Janet, Melissa, Amy and Riki.
Seemingly drowning in their own misery, the siblings learn that they must come together and lean on each other in order to overcome their personal obstacles.
Indian actress Lillette Dubey delivers an exceptional performance in the role as matriarch of the family, Lakshmi Isaac, who loses her husband of 45 years unexpectedly.
I was drawn to her character’s quiet power, when the loss of her husband and her expectation of her children come to a head.
It is unbelievable to see how her character evolves, and the seemingly endless love a mother has for her children.
Despite the actors’ commitment to bring the script to life, sadly the dialogue leaves more to be desired.
I also had an issue with the unnecessary characters who added no substance to the plot, but rather made the story heavier. Clearly only inserted for comedic relief, their jokes and “one-liners” sadly fell flat.
I connected with the touching moments more-so than the humorous ones.
I was really captivated by the cinematography and use of colour to evoke emotions, and the wide outside shots beautifully showed off the South African coast.
3 Days to Go is the perfect movie to go see with your mother, brother, sister or cousin and it will be fun to see - and point out - your own family members in the characters on screen!
