What it's about:

Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal) just got out of jail. His brother, Capt. Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), disappears while on tour in Afghanistan and is presumed dead. Tommy then forges a close bond with Sam's wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and their two young daughters. When Sam is finally rescued and returns home, he's suspicious of Tommy's presence in his family's life.

What we thought of it:

Tales of war are difficult to digest. Unless you've been there, there's no way to comprehend it. As our main character puts it: "They don't understand. No one understands".

But this is more a tale of a family. One that's been blown apart by war. The Cahills have a lot of baggage besides this tragedy. It all gets rather depressing. If it wasn't for Jake Gyllenhaal and his adorable smile, I would have slit my wrists with my Coke straw.

Tobey Maguire does a fine job of transforming his body and mindset into that of a war survivor. Sam Cahill becomes this unboxable character, forcing you to change your mind about him with every long, creepy stare. However, he only has one or two really crazy scenes, and you've seen the best bits in the trailer. What a pity.

Natalie Portman feels wasted in the role of Grace. Firstly, she looks too young to be a mother of fairly grown children, and secondly, there's no room for really powerful performances in Grace's storyline. All she does is cry. However, she's even more beautiful when she cries. Gosh.

One of the most moving performances is by Bailee Madison in the role of Isabelle Cahill, the eldest daughter. At only 10 years old, she's able to say a thousands words with just one quiver of her lip.

Despite outstanding performances from its male leads, there's just not enough to hold onto in this drawn-out tale.

Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal do their best to rescue this complex, emotionally draining drama from its slow pace and depressing theme.
