Helen Mirren plays Chris, the ringleader, based on the real-life Tricia Stewart and Julie Walters is her best friend Annie, based on Angela Baker whose husband died of leukaemia. It's in his name that the unusual bid for charity funds was launched.

The calendar girls raised well over half a million pounds but the media spotlight changed their lives forever. As they feel their way uncertainly in a world that is completely new to them, the story moves from Yorkshire to London to Hollywood. Along the way a funny, poignant and beguiling tale of grit and determination unfolds, as the women encounter the seductive charm - and dangers - of life in the spotlight and, ultimately, discover the enduring power of love and friendship.

What the critics are saying:

"...Calendar Girls is a delight, full of great one-liners, quirky character-based comedy, and two excellent lead performances..."
- Jamie Russell, BBCi

"Nigel Cole's feature-length sitcom Calendar Girls is perhaps the most blatant attempt yet to exploit the popularity of The Full Monty."
- Ed Gonzalez, Slant

" extremely enjoyable, moving film that has a genuine sense of joie de vivre about it..."
- Matthew Turner, View London

Calendar Girls was inspired by the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who set out to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund by posing nude for a Women's Institute calendar. Their courage and chutzpah turned a local story into an international media phenomenon and inspired millions of women worldwide.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! What a funny, true-to-life and poignant story. I thought the first 3 quarters were flawlessly handled, but the director got a bit lost at the end, unfortunately, and tried to make the movie serious and significant. Still a great film though. Intolerable Cruelty

Calendar Girls A movie that had the people in the theatre laughing out loud. It also has it's twists and turns to keep it entertaining. Must see for people that love movies that leave them feeling good. Blue car
