Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Twentieth Century Fox)
What it's about:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes, led by Caesar, is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. The two clans reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.
What we thought:
Listen, I’m not one of those big action blockbuster lovers. I prefer quirky indie movies with surprising plot twists and dreamy story lines that perfectly capture the mundaneness of everyday life.
So sending me to watch one of the big American summer blockbuster movies of the year was a big risk. Would I truly get what millions of fans worldwide already know? Would I be able to appreciate the slickness, smoothness and intertwined hidden sub plotlines that only hardcore Planet of the Apes fans would be able to identify?
Like any good obedient school kid I did my homework. I Googled the facts, watched two of the previous movies and geared myself to take on what can only be described as the most epic battle of my cinematic viewing history.
Armed with popcorn and Coca Cola I took the challenge head on and wondered into the unknown jungle that is Planet of the Apes for me.
I know, I know. I’m really stretching this out. So what did I think? Is it a hit? Is it a fail? How was it?
Well…it was fucking awesome. Dude, for 130 minutes I was transported to a deep dark post –apocalyptic San Francisco where man and ape are sworn enemies! There were gun fights and explosions and loud music and 3D CGI effects that made my mind want to erupt!
There were smart plot twists, quirky references to the previous movies, clever dialogue and heart wrenching tear-filled moments on the level of any Meryl Streep movie ever.
I mean it was gigantic! Blam! Blast! Bomb! Boom! Stuff flying everywhere. Guns shooting. Bratatat! Pew! Pew! Splat!
It was like someone set off a thousand fireworks in a glass jar and then opened the lid and everything came bursting out and exploded over the cinema. Whizzzzz! Flash! Burst!
It was amazing. I loved every moment of it and it left me wanting more! Loads more! Much more!
