In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilization; scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn't be, and trying find out what happened. Answer: nothing good. That's what Sarge (The Rock) and his unit of high-tech Marines find out the hard way when they're sent to investigate a disturbance on the base--which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters.

What the critics are saying:

"It takes someone who has actually played the game to explain what a colossally bad idea the Doom movie -- and most films that use video games as source material -- was from the start."
- Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle

"It's unfathomable how many times Hollywood has struck out in attempts to convert popular video/computer games into movies. This is the kind of misfire that reinforces negative stereotypes."
- James Berardinelli, Reelviews

"The performances are awful, the action sequences are impossible to follow, the violence is gratuitous, the lighting is bad and I have my doubts that catering truck was even up to snuff on this project."
- Richard Roeper, Ebert and Roeper

This dreary homage to the best selling video game is as much fun as a face full of bug spray, not to mention a waste of The Rock's talents.
